Why Children's Photography is a Different Discipline

Children's photography is not portrait photography with smaller subjects. It requires a fundamentally different approach to session planning, direction, and the technical handling of situations that rarely go according to plan. A toddler who was cooperative during the drive to the shoot location may be completely unwilling to engage with a camera once you arrive. A school-age child who was enthusiastic about the session may become self-conscious the moment the lens points at them. Teenagers may be outwardly resistant to the entire exercise while actually wanting the images to look good. Every age group brings its own dynamics, and knowing how to work with each requires experience that is specific to children's photography.

Our approach is built around one principle: we work with the child rather than against them. This means taking the time to make the child comfortable before we start shooting, giving them agency in how the session feels, keeping the energy light and genuinely fun, and being flexible enough to abandon a planned setup if a better spontaneous moment is happening. The best children's photographs are always the unguarded moments — the genuine expressions, the movement, the interactions — not the posed ones.

Toddlers and Young Children

For children under three, the single most effective thing a parent can do before a photography session is manage the timing around the child's energy and routine. A toddler who is hungry, tired, or due for a nap will not produce good photography results regardless of the photographer's skill. We recommend scheduling toddler sessions shortly after a good nap and a meal, at a time of day when the child is typically at their most energetic and engaged. Sessions for this age group are kept to 45 to 60 minutes maximum.

We do not attempt to get toddlers to pose or to look directly at the camera on instruction. We engage with them at their level, use props and activities that naturally draw their interest, and position ourselves to capture the expressions and movements that result. The images look natural because they are natural — we are capturing what is actually happening rather than directing what should happen.
